In November 2017, five of us aged between 52 and 69 set out to trek for a month in Ethiopia with Mitiku Dessie as our guide throughout. We began in the Simien Mountains, attempted the trek from the Simiens to Lalibela and ended up hiking on the Bale Plateau.
I cannot speak highly enough of Mitiku. He has such an extensive knowledge about, and love for, the highlands. Nothing was ever too much trouble and he did everything he could to make our walking varied, exciting and challenging – but within our limits (just!).
He is an absolute diplomat and navigated us safely and calmly throughout all sorts of interesting situations. His command of English is incredible and he has a wonderful sense of humour. He is also a bird enthusiast – which delighted all of us.
This was my second trip to Ethiopia. I met Mitiku the first time round, and I can’t wait to go back.
