Simien Mountains – 10 Days

Day-By-Day itinerary

Day 1, Gondar-Sankaber

You will depart early morning from Gondar to Debark. In Debark we will register your visit with the park office, pick up scout and then drive into the park to arrive at Sankaber. You could drive all the way to Sankaber or we can stop before near Buyit Ras for a short hike to see beautiful views of the mountain ridges, and see some gelada baboons. Arriving in Sankaber we will be met with supplies and camp for the night.

Day 2 – Sankaber-Gich Camp

From Sankaber we hike along the 800m ridges and see the foothills below. We descend down the ridge into the valley and view the Jinbar reiver and Gich abyss. And then we climb up to Gich village for the second night campsite.

Day 3 – Gich (via Imet Gogo, Siha Gorge, Keda Dit) – Gich

After breakfast at Gich campsite we hike on the grass plateau and see the incredible Giant Lobelia plants. Two more hours hiking and we will reach Imet Gogo and the stunning 360* view of the Simien Mountain range. From this altitude of 3,926m we can see the canyons below, the valleys and ridges all around. We then return to Gich by passing through Siha Gorge for a lunch break and we then relax at the campsite. Before nightfall there is the possibility to go on a short hike to see sunset at Keda Dit. Sleep at Gich.

Day 4 – Gich-Innatye-Chennek

After breakfast there is a seven hour hike from Gich to a towering mountain pass: we go south-east to Innatye and descend into a forest of Giant Hazel cover and then into open grasslands. We climb up to Innatye to view the sheer drop, and then continue on towards Chennek where you will be able to view the wildlife like, Walia Ibex, Ethiopian wolf, Gelada baboons and plant life. Chennek will be the campsite for this night.

Day 5 – Chenneck-Ambiko

Two hours hiking gets us to the summit of the Buwahit Mountain pass (4,200m). And we see from here the Mountain of Ras Dejen. You will follow the path down towards Mesheha valley and cross a river and back up again towards Ambiko where you will camp for the night.

Day 6 – Ambiko-Ras Dejen-Ambiko

To come to the peak of Ras Dejen we start out into the main valley before sunrise. Then you will start ascending the mountain with a steep climb amidst the Giant Lobelia plants. The last part of the hike will likely be very challenging, but very rewarding when you are able to reach the highest point in Ethiopia! At 4543m there are amazing views of the immense landscape – you have made it up to the top of the roof of Ethiopia! After approximately 8-9 hours of hiking for the day you will arrive at Ambiko campsite to sleep.

Day 7 – Ambiko-Sona

There is a 9 hour hike from Ambiko down into the Meseha River and up to the Arkwazye village. Here you will arrive at the Sona campsite and be able to take in the view of everything you have achieved so far.

Day 8 – Sona-Mekareba

From Sona we will come to the Incya Valley and descend into the lowlands. After lunch at the Incya River there is time to swim before heading out for another hike along the banks of the river to Mekarbe campsite where you will stay for the night.

Day 9 – Markerba-Mulet

Hiking from Markerba to Mulet, we pass along the riverbed of the Incya River and this provides the perfect opportunity to see numerous birds: pin-tailed waders, village indigo paradise monarchs and tropical bobu can all be spotted here. We break for lunch at Derkwenth pool where you can have another chance to take a swim before climbing to the Awazza village. Here you can find the spectacular Awazza Table Mountain and then hike to the last campsite at Mulet.

Day 10 – Mulet-Gondar

After breakfast there is a 3 hour hike to Adi Arkaye where we meet the vehicle that will take you back to Gondar.
