Day-By-Day itinerary
Day 1, Addis Ababa-Bale Mountains
Drive from the capital Addis Ababa to Bale Mountains National Park. Arriving at the headquarters of the park in the afternoon, we will have time for an afternoon hike, with the chance to see two endemic mammals that live in the area: Menelik’s Bushbuck and the Mountain Nyala. There is much birdlife in the area too: the Blue-Winged Goose, the Spot-Breasted Lapwing, the Abyssinian Long Claw, the Wattled Ibis and many other species. Overnight we camp near the park entrance.
Day 2, Sodota
We will walk through Dinsho and enter the National Park. Around Dinsho, the Mountain Nyala and Menelik’s Bushbuck should be visible and in the Park we may see Ethiopian Wolves. There is a stop by Habera Waterfall for a nice break. The trekking will be 6-7 hours ending at Sodota where we will camp.
Day 3, Sodota-Wasama
To get to Wasama we hike through a beautiful landscape with stunning views, through Mararo Valley where the Lammergeyer and Verraux Eagles nest. Trekking we be for 5-6 hours and we camp at Wasama.
Day 4, Wasama-Gebre Gurracha
To start the day we will hike up Mt. Wasama (4200m) and then head down into the Worgona Valley. Falcons, raptors, and potentially the Ethiopian wolf can be seen and we end the day at Lake Gebre Gurracha, meaning “black lake” in the Oromic language – where we will camp. The hike is 6-7 hours.
Day 5, Sanetti Plateau–Addis Ababa.
We take a short trek from Gebre Gurracha up to the Sennati Plateau and we will meet the vehicles there before returning to Addis Ababa
